\n<\/a>It took place in a world
\nlong long ago
\n<\/span>they say:
\n<\/span>a monkey, a rabbit,
\n<\/span>and a fox
\n<\/span>struck up a friendship,
\n<\/span>mornings
\n<\/span>frolicking field and hill
\n<\/span>evenings
\n<\/span>coming home to the forest, ,
\n<\/span>living thus
\n<\/span>while the years went by,
\n<\/span>when Indra,
\n<\/span>sovereign of skies,
\n<\/span>hearing of this,
\n<\/span>curious to know
\n<\/span>if it as true,
\n<\/span>turned himself into an old man,
\n<\/span>tottering along,
\n<\/span>made his way to where they were.
\n<\/span>\u201cyou three,\u201d
\n<\/span>he said,
\n<\/span>\u201care of separate species
\n<\/span>yet I\u2019m told play together
\n<\/span>with a single heart.
\n<\/span>If what I\u2019ve heard
\n<\/span>is true,
\n<\/span>pray save an old man
\n<\/span>who\u2019s hungry!\u201d
\n<\/span>then he set his staff aside,
\n<\/span>sat down to rest.
\n<\/span>Simple enough, they said,
\n<\/span>and presently
\n<\/span>the monkey appeared
\n<\/span>from the grove behind
\n<\/span>bearing nuts
\n<\/span>he\u2019d gathered there,
\n<\/span>and the fox returned
\n<\/span>from the rivulet in front,
\n<\/span>clamped in his jaws
\n<\/span>a fish he\u2019d caught.
\n<\/span>but the rabbit,
\n<\/span>though he hopped and hopped
\n<\/span>everywhere
\n<\/span>couldn\u2019t find anything at all,
\n<\/span>while others
\n<\/span>cursed him because
\n<\/span>his heart was not like theirs.
\n<\/span>Miserable me!
\n<\/span>he thought
\n<\/span>and then he said,
\n<\/span>\u201cMonkey, go cut me
\n<\/span>firewood!
\n<\/span>Fox, build me
\n<\/span>a fire with it!\u201d
\n<\/span>and when they\u2019d done
\n<\/span>what he asked,
\n<\/span>he flung himself
\n<\/span>into the midst of the flames,
\n<\/span>made himself an offering
\n<\/span>for an unknown old man.
\n<\/span>When the old man
\n<\/span>saw this
\n<\/span>his heart withered.
\n<\/span>He looked up to the sky,
\n<\/span>cried aloud,
\n<\/span>then sank to the ground,
\n<\/span>and in a while, <\/span>
\nbeating his breast, <\/span>
\nsaid <\/span>
\nyou three friends <\/span>
\nhas done his best, <\/span>
\nbut what the rabbit did <\/span>
\ntouches me most! <\/span>
\nThen he made the rabbit <\/span>
\nwhole again <\/span>
\nand gathering the dead body <\/span>
\nup in the arms, <\/span>
\ntook it and <\/span>
\nlaid it to rest <\/span>
\nin the palace of the moon. <\/span>
\nFrom that time till now <\/span>
\nthe story\u2019s been told. <\/span>
\nthis tale <\/span>
\nof how the rabbit <\/span>
\ncame to be <\/span>
\nin the moon, <\/span>
\nand even I <\/span>
\nwhen I hear it <\/span>
\nfind the tears <\/span>
\nsoaking the sleeve of my robe<\/span><\/p>\n

The poem is a retelling of one of the Jataka stories, tales of the Buddha in his earlier incarnations when he preformed various acts of self-sacrifice. Ryokan follows the version of the tale found in chapter five of the \u201cKonjaku monogatari\u201d, a collection of stories in Japanese, many Buddhist in nature, compiled around 1100. This version relates the Jataka tale to the old Chinese legend of a rabbit who inhabits the moon. There are numerous versions of the poem with slight textual variations; I follow the text given in Yoshino Hideo\u2019s collection, pp. 319-22
